CONFIDENTIAL NO. 002 · BETWEEN THE LINES
QUESTIONS I ASK MEN WHO ARE USED TO GIVING THE ANSWERS
Most people ask what you do. I’m more interested in what makes you pause before answering.
Men who carry a lot of responsibility are questioned constantly.
What’s the plan? What’s the number? What happens next?
Everyone wants certainty from them. Very few people ask a question without needing something from the answer.
I do.
Not because I’m trying to turn dinner into an interview. I have far better manners and much better ways of holding someone’s attention. I simply enjoy the moment when a polished answer gives way to an honest one.
I listen for what you almost say. The detail you dismiss. The story you shorten. The subtle change in your voice when you mention something that actually matters. I know when to follow the thread and when to let a little silence do the work.
What did it cost you to become the man everyone depends on?
When nobody needs an answer from you, what do you actually want?
What is something everyone assumes about you but almost no one has gotten right?
I wouldn’t ask all three before dessert haha. Some questions deserve the right timing.
I don’t need every conversation to become serious, either. I love quick wit, playful disagreement, ridiculous stories and the kind of laughter that makes the table beside us curious. I can move between ambition, travel, life and something completely unserious without allowing the energy to go flat.
I can appreciate what you’ve built without being dazzled into silence by it. I have an education, plans and a future of my own unfolding. That makes conversation with me easy but never empty.
The gift of gab isn’t talking without stopping.
It’s knowing what deserves a follow-up, what deserves a laugh, and when the most interesting thing you can offer is your full attention.
Good conversation becomes its own kind of tension.
It’s the moment you realize I have been listening instead of waiting for my turn to speak. The eye contact that changes because your answer gave me something worth leaning closer for. The ease of knowing you don’t have to perform, impress or carry the entire evening by yourself.
By the time the night ends, I may know more than what you do for a living or where you prefer to spend the summer. I’ll know what genuinely excites you, what makes you laugh when your guard is down and which part of your story deserves another conversation.
My face may be the reason you paused.
My mind is why another evening starts sounding like a very good idea.
And be careful what you tell me…I remember details, and I’m very good at picking up exactly where we left off.
THE QUESTION I’D ASK YOU
What is something everyone thinks they know about you and almost no one has ever gotten right?
Come with curiosity. I’ll bring mine.
